Classes are back!
So I am starting to teach classes again. Currently the classes will be held at Workshoots in Grand Rapids, MI. This is a wonderful facility with classroom space as well as studio space that photographers can rent time. The studio space includes all the lighting you would need, as well as a host of props to use. Find a class below that you are interested in, then a date that works for you, and then click on the link provided to get to the registration page for the class. Workshoots is located on the northwest side of Grand Rapids just north of downtown, and easily accessible from US-131.

Fundamentals of PhotographyThe fundamentals of photography class is a 6 hour workshop that will go over all the basics of photography from the basic camera layout, and operation, to lenses, lighting, and a discussion on those extras you might need to consider. You will learn the basics of exposure, when to use each mode, and how to set exposure in manual mode.
Saturday April 2nd from 9 AM to 4 PM Saturday May 7th from 9 AM to 4 PM Pitching the Point and ShootAre you tired of using your camera phone or that old point and shoot camera? Are you ready to move to a more serious camera, but just don't know what to pick? Well this is the class for you! We will discuss the differences between the DSLR and the mirrorless cameras. You will learn what a full frame vs a crop sensor camera is, and what it means to you. We will discuss the basics of lenses. You will also find out about some of those add ons that salesmen will want to sell you, and if it is something you need or not. You will walk out of the class ready to navigate the waters of camera buying.
Tuesday March 22nd from 7 PM to 9 PM Transferring prints to woodWe have all seen the regular prints hanging on the wall of photos. Do you want something that looks different? Would you like to get your photos to take on a unique look? Then you should look into doing a wood transfer print. When you transfer or print your image on wood you will get the warmth and unique look of the wood along with your image. This is really good for vintage prints, or photos of family members. It also makes for an incredible gift.
In this class we will look at two different ways to transfer a print to wood, as well as a way to print directly on wood with your printer. We will work through all the steps, and you will see examples of images transferred and printed on wood. Tuesday March 29th from 7 PM to 9 PM Thursday April 14th from 7 PM to 9 PM Basics of LightingOne of the most important things for taking your photography from simple to sublime is learning to control your light. Lighting is something you will need to master to move from good to great. In this class we will cover the basics of lighting. You will learn the difference between natural light, continuous light, and strobe lighting. You will learn that shooting natural light is more than just pointing your camera and taking a photo. There are ways to control even natural light. You will learn what the different types of strobe lighting are, and also the basics of light modifiers. You will work through figuring out the settings for both your lights and the camera to get a good exposure. We will work with both on camera and off camera flash.

Learning Layers - The powerhouse of PhotoshopLearning Layers is a 2 hour class that will cover the basics of layers. You will learn what layers are, and why you want to master them. You will learn non-destructive editing using layers. We will cover the healing brush and clone tools with layers. You will learn the difference between a normal layer and an adjustment layer. We will discuss layer opacity and it’s affect on the image. This class will give you the basic tools needed for more advanced photoshop classes.
Thursday March 31st from 7 to 9 PM Tuesday April 12th from 7 to 9 PM Making selections in PhotoshopIn this class you will learn different techniques to make selections in Photoshop. We will cover basic selection tools, and when to use each. You will learn how to refine your selections. We will cover inverting selections. You will learn how to use a selection to make a layer mask for an area also. We will also discuss the more difficult selections like hair. Finally, we will talk about green screen photography and how to shoot your subject to prevent selection challenges.
Date to be announced Import and Export in LightroomLightroom is a very powerful tool for organizing and managing photos. The key to unlocking the tool is to understand the import and export tools. In this class you will learn the power of the import tool, and some tricks for photo organization. You will learn the power of keywords, and of using collections. We will also discuss the export feature. We will discuss making export profiles, and why you will want a number of different profiles. We will discuss print sized, web sized, and even Facebook banner sized profiles. You will also learn why you want to use web sized exports for photos for web pages and social media, and why it is so important for SEO.
